As Director of Development at Cherette Group, John Cherette leads the firm’s real estate development efforts across West Michigan and other markets. He oversees all phases of the development lifecycle, from site selection and project design to municipal approvals, construction coordination, and asset disposition. John also plays a key role in sourcing opportunities, structuring deals, and managing relationships with municipalities, consultants, and capital partners.

John has been instrumental in the growth of Cherette Group’s platform, contributing to the development, ownership, and management of approximately 1,100 Class A apartment and townhome units across West Michigan. His work includes the development and leading the sale of Harmony Lake Apartment Homes (217 units) and playing a key role in the transformation of a 135-acre mixed-use development in Fruitport Township, including the arrival of Costco, residential neighborhoods, and commercial outlots. He currently leads multiple active developments, including the new Cherette Group corporate office building, The Summit at Harvey Townhomes, and Vista 45, a large-scale mixed-use project.

Before returning to real estate full-time, John worked as a clinical social worker, specializing in homelessness and youth and families. He provided therapy through Washtenaw County Community Mental Health, including dialectical behavior therapy for individuals with complex mental health needs. This experience continues to inform his thoughtful, community-oriented approach to development.

John holds a bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a licensed real estate salesperson, and serves on the Board of Directors for Mosaic Counseling, where he is a member of the finance committee. He is also a member of the Commercial Alliance of Realtors West Michigan (CARWM).

A lifelong resident of Michigan, John is passionate about contributing to the long-term growth of communities across West Michigan. He lives with his wife and children and remains closely connected to the region he continues to help shape through his work.
